Towing vehicle in enclosed trailer requires special
permit in Ontario

By Harold Merton, publisher

Do you tow a motor vehicle in an enclosed trailer? If you tow a motor vehicle in an enclosed trailer you need a special certificate.

Many people, including this writer were not aware that carrying a motor vehicle inside an enclosed trailer requires a Hazardous Materials handling certificate. During a recent interview with a member of the team that enforces Ontario's trucking laws we learned that once you place a motor vehicle inside a trailer you suddenly fall under the jurisdiction of this group of enforcement officers.

The certificate is quite simple to fill out but must be carried in the tow vehicle and the officer will not give you the opportunity to complete one once you are stopped. You must have the completed form ready for presentation should you ever be stopped. If not you a guilty of an infraction.

Most of us did not realize that there is a difference in carrying a car on an open trailer and carrying one inside an enclosed trailer. The fine is substantial.

If you need to secure this certificate call or visit one of Ontario's weigh stations (without your vehicle inside the enclosed trailer) and they will assist you.
