Generator manufacturer receives 74 million dollar contract to develop fuel cell

The manufacturer of Onan AC generators, Cummins Power Generation, has received a $74.2 million contract from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop fuel cell technology.

For the next ten years Cummins and an associate company McDermott Technologies will develop a compact, affordable ten kilowatt fuel cell module that is expected to provide virtually silent power with significantly lower fuel consumption and exhaust emission than from existing engine style generators.

A representative of the company said that solid oxide fuel technology has tremendous potential as a clean and efficient auxiliary power source for RVs and other remote applications. He said the goal is to reduce the manufacturing costs of these fuel cells and bring them into the same price range as current premium generators powered by diesel, LP gas and gasoline.
