Fleetwood offers redesigned new 40’ American Eagle MotorhomeBy Harold Merton If you are looking for pure luxury in a large motorhome then Fleetwood Industries has it for you this year in their new American Eagle. The company has introduced a new look for their new 40 foot 2001 American Eagle motorhome and it is one that is pure class. A totally redesigned front end is the highlight of the new exterior look. It features 50 inch windshields - a full 10 inches larger than on the previous year’s model. A new glass mounting system is used where the windshields are first bonded to a steel frame before they are mounted in the European bus style fibreglass front cap. The four headlights are now recessed into the attractive front bumper trim and the front cap is highlighted with a raised crown that gives the motorhome a unique and distinctive new profile. On the interior, the new raised front cap allows use of a new ceiling mounted 27 inch TV set at the front of the coach which hinges down for easy viewing by the occupants. The living area slideout comes with a sofa bed but can be ordered with an adjacent galley or dining table. Another first this year is a bedroom slideout that moves the bed almost 18 inches. The result is a bedroom with a wall-to-wall wardrobe closet that runs across the entire rear end of the coach. The bed height has also been lowered by an inch and a half, making for much easier access. The rear bedroom also comes with a 20 inch TV as standard equipment. A new wraparound dashboard is standard equipment and includes additional storage because of the new design. Interior height of the coach has also gone up by 3 inches to 82 inches. This changes improves overhead storage as well as headroom. The interior body width is now 102 inches. The 2001 American Eagle is offered in seven floor plans. Interior hardwood selections include whitewash oak, cherry, maple and walnut. There are also four standard exterior graphic arrangements and four optional colors are available. Other features include keyless entry, single latch basement doors, a security system, radiated heated tile floors in the galley and bath and a special locking system on the door where pneumatic pistons lock the top and side of the door when the emergency brake is released. According to Fleetwood this offers “a superior front door seal”. Liquid capacities include about 64 U.S. gallons for grey water, 43 gallons black water, 95 gallons of fresh water, a 50 gallon LP gas tank and a 150 gallon fuel tank. If you can afford this model then filling the fuel tank shouldn’t be a problem. A 7.5 killowatt Quiet Diesel AC generator is located in a power slide-out rack in the front of the vehicle. Standard powertrain includes the Cummins C8.3, 350 hp ISC diesel which develops 1,050 foot pounds of torque. The transmission is a six speed Allison 3000 MH with overdrive all on the standard chassis - a Spartan Mountain Master GT featuring independent front suspension. Michelin 295/80 R22.5 LRH Low Profile radial tires are standard and the full air brakes incorporate an (ABS) anti-lock braking system. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price in the U.S.A. is about $310,000.
