Steam trains still run at South Simcoe Railway By Harold Merton If you like steam trains then you'll be pleased to know that you can take a steam train excursion right here in southern Ontario.Located in Tottenham, the South Simcoe Railway is just 45 minutes north of the Toronto airport and seventy-five minutes from the Kitchener area. A visit there is a unique trip into the past that the whole family will enjoy. The steam train excursions are operated by the South Simcoe Railway Heritage Corporation, a non-profit historical organization, a group that deserves the financial support of people like ourselves who want to keep the memory of the steam era alive. All steam train excursions are round trip departing from their station on Mill Street west in downtown Tottenham. The railway's station offers refreshments and a gift shop featuring railway gifts, souvenirs and "Thomas The Tank Engine" toys. When it's time for the "all aboard"visitors embark on an exciting journey through the scenic Beeton Creek Valley aboard the railway's historic steam train. Visitors travel in restored 1920's coaches with an authentic coal burning steam locomotive at the head of the train. The return trip from Tottenham to Beeton takes just under an hour and is highlighted by the conductor's friendly and informative commentary along the way. You can even arrange for a Baggage Car Birthday Party on the line. This unique way to celebrate is available on any Sunday or holiday Monday departure from Victoria Day through Thanksgiving. Up to 20 people can enjoy the party in the baggage car section of the train as it travels through the scenic countryside. Priced at just $135 the party includes all taxes and fares for 20 passengers and a personalized, locomotive-shaped cake. Advance bookings are required. From December 1st to 16th (on Saturdays and Sundays only) the group supports Tottenham's community food bank with an old-fashioned train trip with Santa. During your tour of the winter countryside Santa visits with the children. Tickets for this excursion are sold by advance purchase only and all child fares are donated to the food bank for the purchase of perishable food items. Across the road is a conservation park with camping, swimming and picnic areas and local stores and restaurants are just a block away. During the regular season, their weekday excursion train is handicapped accessible. To reach the railway you travel Highway 400 to Highway 9, then proceed 20 km to the traffic lights at Tottenham Road - a sign points north to Tottenham. Once in Tottenham turn left onto Mill Street at the first set of traffic lights and follow signs to the free parking. They suggest you arrive 20 minutes before departure to allow time for parking, ticketing and boarding. Public days are Sunday to Wednesday each week during July and August this year. Fares including taxes are $10 for adults, $9 for seniors 65+ and $6.50 for children 15 and under. Babies under 2 not occupying a seat travel free. Visa, MasterCard and Interac are accepted.
